I knew from reading the synopsis that Summers With Juliette was going to be an emotional read, so I was prepared for it.
What I wasn’t prepared for was the for the punch that this book packed.
It is a gut wrenching, heart breaking but also heartwarming of friendship, and what lengths friends go to for each other. It is about mending broken friendships, forging new relationships.
Juliette calls on the pinky swear she, Sera and Anna made when they were teenagers. She is dying and wants to spend one last summer with her best friends.
I loved Juliette from the minute the book started. So strong, she has had so many horrible things happen in her life, but she lives her life every day with a smile. I want to be as strong as her when I grow up!
Anna and Sera, each with their own problems but they come together for Juliette, and while they are repairing their friendship, they are forging life changing relationships with men they meet while in town.
From the blurb you know that there are going to be heartbreaking moments. But boy the one that I knew was going to happen still took a strong grip on my heart and felt like it was squeezing the life out of me.
It is hard to believe that this is Ms Madden's debut novel. The story, the writing, the emotion leapt off the pages, and I could not put Summers With Juliet down once I started.
This is a wonderful read, so grab a cuppa and a box of tissues and dive in. You will not be disappointed.
I cannot wait to see what Ms Madden has for us next.

I wanted to find a new author that would transport me and boy did I find that with Summers with Juliette. I knew from reading the synopsis that Summers With Juliette was going to be an emotional read, however I had not expected it to be so beautifully written, so intense and so real. It is courageous and incredibly heartbreaking. Yet it proves the bonds of friendship and what we will do for each other is truly humbling.
Juliette calls on the pinky swear she, Sera and Anna made when they were 13 and all living in the idealic Australian coastal country town of Ellesmere. While separated for some years as Sera and Anna have moved to Sydney for their jobs, Juliette needs her best friends to come back for summer as she is dying and wants to spend one last summer with them. I know what a heartbreaking premise. I loved Juliette from the first chapter. She was so strong, she has had so many horrible things happen in her life, but she lives her life every day smiling. She was gentle and thoughtful and gave of herself. This could have been a sad story (and you will shed tears) but the humour, great dialogue and fabulous characters makes it quite uplifting.
From the synopsis you know that there are going to be heartbreaking moments yet it still grips you when it happens and leaves you breathless.
This is a wonderful read, it should be made into a movie. Awe-inspiring.
A little background as to how I came across this book is through attending another author’s signing. We got talking and Emily said she had a book coming out. Naturally, we all know what my question was. Well, I remember putting my hands up asking her to stop with ‘that sounds like a book I would read’. So I approached the publisher and then, the rest was history. I am thrilled to say that this debut novel does not disappoint. I even held off starting it so I could ensure minimal interruptions.
Summers with Juliette is an emotional story about mending broken relationships, forging new ones and saying goodbye to dear ones. I was drawn into the story about the small town with some even smaller minds that thrives on keeping the townships ghosts going through the rumour mill.
This book managed to make me cry, laugh and fall in love with the characters. I expected this book to hit me in the heart hard but it took it to the ideal I have about books. I look for books to not only entertain me, but for them to have me come out the end with questions about my own life, (yes, dare I say it - life lessons from fictional people). This is exactly what this book did. Several times I put the book down, saying to myself, ‘wow – I really need to do more of that’ or ‘I need to ring my bestie and make sure we catch up face to face soon’. Dare I say it, this book changed me, and it was for the better.
I have made some predictions in the past and I’m going to make it with this one. If this is the calibre of this author’s writing, I cannot wait for her upcoming works. This book ticks all my boxes. My only complaint (and it’s a minor one) is that with the cast being large, I was getting hooked into one character’s story and then the chapter would end and jump to another’s – frustratingly delicious.
I encourage everyone to spend a Summer with Juliette. Pack a drink, some sunscreen and some tissues. The hurt is real. Even looking at the cover, I get a lump in my throat but for so many reasons. The love, the laughs, the beautiful moments all wrapped up in this book.
I was kindly given an ARC of this book for my honest opinion. Getting this book for free has in no way, shape or form swayed my opinion. I will be buying a copy of this book also on release day.
