Award-winning author Doranna Durgin has over 30 published novels (MMPB, trade, and hardcover) and another 19 short pieces. Now her dog-themed stories are collected in THE HEART OF DOG, along with those by other award-winning authors, including Jeffrey Carver, Julie Czerneda, Tanya Huff, John Mierau, Fiona Patton, Jennifer Roberson, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, & John Zakour.
========
The Heart of Dog includes Doranna's various backlist dog stories, and that's all it was initially meant to include--until her dog-loving writer friends heard about her need to fund ongoing expensive veterinary treatment for her beloved young companion and dog sports partner, ConneryBeagle. In short order, the book filled out with nine more stories, all from wonderful authors.
The stories encompass a range of genres and moods--plenty of humor, plenty of sweetness and satisfaction, and above all, a profound understanding of the Heart of Dog.
Author Friends of Connery Jeffrey Carver, Julie Czerneda, Tanya Huff, John Mierau, Fiona Patton, Jennifer Roberson, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, & John Zakour (x2!); graphic artist Pat Ryan, and production assistant Tom Powers. Connery himself has been on social networking since the day he left the litter, and is on Twitter, LiveJournal, and FaceBook as "ConneryBeagle."

I've had this book on my Kindle for a good while, but what tends to happen with me is that as I add more and more books to the device, some just get pushed so far out of sight, I tend to forget about them. I was looking for something I could put on my bedside table to read before settling in to sleep and I wanted something that wouldn't necessarily tempt me to keep going "just a few more pages." Ah ha! Short stories fill the ticket very nicely. The book was originally published to help defray the cost of tests and treatment for Durgin's competition sport beagle, Connery. He has a mystery illness, probably immune system related, the manifests in multiple forms, and testing and medication and all that goes with trying to track down a non-specific issue is not cheap. So, Durgin collected some of her backlist dog stories into a volume, and when the word got out about Connery, more of her dog-loving author friends also contributed to the collection.
The result is a set of sci-fi and fantasy based short stories, all featuring dogs in one way or another. Well, one is not technically a dog as we know dogs, but who's to say what a dog will become in the future? All are well-written and make for good reading. Some will make you laugh, some will tug at your heartstrings, some will have you holding your breath. All showcase the very essence of dogs and their human (and other) companions.
Readers should be aware that some of Durgin's stories in the collection are set in worlds belonging to her novels and other works, so there may be some context missing if you aren't familiar with those. But each story is self-contained and if you can set aside not knowing all the details of the background, you can enjoy each for its own tale.
These stories will appeal to anyone who loves dog and stories about dogs, and, really, animal lovers everywhere. As ConneryBeagle himself would say, these stories are "Bawhsome!"

A great assortment of stories. Heart touching and some humor as well.
Well worth the cost and a great cause as well.
Some of the stories in this compilation are a bit odd, but overall some are great and some are terrible.
Have not been disappointed yet with Durgin's non-romance writing. Good stories and I can tell she loves her dog. Appreciated being exposed to new authors.
I thoroughly enjoyed and LOVED this book. I want more!!! This book made you feel for the characters wholeheartedly, and with genuine concern. Each story had me guessing the outcome and wanting to keep reading without putting the book down. I definitely want more of the same. Anyone who is a dog lover would appreciate all the genres and ways dogs were portrayed in these stories.
Most of all I loved the "Bitches" series....MORE..
I didn't realize this book was a science fiction collection of stories when I bought it. The description on doesn't mention that. I was totally thrown for a loop when I started the first story; I almost quit right there. I decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I did. Although I'm not a science fiction lover, I did enjoy some of the stories.
I really enjoyed this mix of short stories. Each one was completely different, except the Botch stories from Doranna. I really hope this collection is what is needed for Connery. I have cats and, yes, they are my children also and I will fight for them to the last stand. The stories in here teach as well as entertain. I particularly liked the one with the old wolf teaching the young... But, you have to read it to understand. And the one about the Border Collie and the asteroid. That one was really something! I highly recommend this collection.
Being the 'kind reader' ^_^. who is mentioned in the Afterward, albeit namelessly, (you'll just have to take my word for it) I was impatient until I could buy this book for myself!
Doranna is a prolific writer, and reminiscent for me, of one of my all time favs, Andre Norton, in being evocative of ambiance of place/time while not straying from somewhat spare descriptions, relying on developing character and letting plot unfold and leaving a lot up to the reader's imagination.
That, for me, is one reason why I love to read, to allow my mind to embellish on a story and visualize what the author has left unwritten.
The fact that this anthology is in existence because ConneryBeagle needs our help doesn't detract from the quality or my enjoyment of the stories, by Doranna and those other wonderful authors who have contributed their own stories.
Being a 'dog person', in a sortof specialized way; positive clicker trainer and raw feeder, I am very pleased that there are authors other than Doranna that 'get it', and write about dogs or include them in their stories with understanding and compassion without any pc sensibilities or cutesiness.
I am especially thrilled with Doranna's short story with her "Feral Darkness" characters - my fav of Doranna's novels. (no Eban tho' \ )
This doesn't let you off the hook for a full length sequel, Doranna! ; )
I dl this anthology on for PC, which is in all ways easy, free and painless to use.
